Patients with atrial fibrillation (Afib) have been prescribed the blood-thinning drug Pradaxa to help prevent strokes and blood clots. This medication can also be prescribed to patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which most commonly occurs in the legs or pulmonary embolism (PE) which mainly affects the lungs. These patients are at a higher risk of blood clots. Left untreated, these blood clots can be fatal.

Approximately six months after Pradaxa’s manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim released the drug, the FDA started receiving reports about patients suffering severe injury (bleeding in the kidneys, intestine and brain as well as heart attacks) or even death.
