Erie man hit and injured by UPS truck while riding bicycle

One person was injured in a pedestrian accident on Friday evening after being hit by a UPS box-truck. The accident happened in Erie along West Grandview Boulevard near Pittsburgh Avenue and the Glenwood Beer Distributor.

Police say the man who was hit was riding his bike at approximately 6 p.m. when the accident occurred. First responders estimate that the man was displaced ten to fifteen feet after being struck. He is believed to have fractured his and was taken to UPMC Hamot to be treated.

Police are questioning witnesses and there is no word of any foul play. Police were unsure if the man was crossing the street and headed directly into the path of the truck or if he was riding alongside the UPS vehicle and collided with the truck.

Professional drivers should be held to the strictest guidelines when navigating our roadways. Taking an eye off the road for just a split second can lead to accidents such as this one. With weather conditions the way they have been and the darkness of winter setting in just after rush hour, it is extremely important that pedestrian and professional drivers alike are overly cautious when on the road.
