Erie hit-and-run leaves one man dead and no suspect

Erie police are continuing to investigate a pedestrian accident that has left one man seriously dead and no one yet in custody.

Police say an unidentified man who looked to be in his 50s was crossing the 1500 block of Liberty Street near the Executive Personal Fitness building and Tom Slayton's Auto Body in Erie. Police told reporters that the man looked to have suffered what they called life-threatening injuries and was immediately taken to UPMC Hamot to be treated. He was pronounced dead this morning.

Witnesses told police that the victim was crossing Liberty Street just before 7:30 p.m. when the car struck him and that the car was last seen speeding away, travelling southbound on Liberty Street. No one was able to get a make, model, or license plate number, but police do say that they are looking for a vehicle with possible moderate to substantial front-end damages.

The street was closed for a short time while evidence was collected and police questioned witnesses. Further details of the hit-and-run are expected to be announced some time this weekend. Police are asking anyone who knows anything to call 814-870-1171 or 814-870-1120.
