Safety top of mind for ODOT officials for final weeks of 2013

The Ohio Department of Transpiration has tracked traffic-related fatalities since 1936. During 2012, a total of 1,122 people died in motor vehicle or traffic-related accidents. This year, ODOT officials are hoping to keep that number at its current 945 which would make 2013 the least deadly year on record.

During the final two weeks of 2013, many Ohioans are expected to take to the roads to celebrate the holidays with family and friends. The increase in traffic and winter weather often signals some of the most dangerous and potentially deadly driving conditions experienced throughout the year. In an effort to keep drivers, passengers and pedestrians in Ohio safe during the final weeks of 2013, plans for increased patrols as well as safety reminder signage are planned.

Of the 1,122 reported traffic-related deaths last year, the vast majority involved drivers who had been drinking and drivers and passengers who were not wearing seat belts. In response, anti-drunk driving and seat belt usage initiatives will continue to be a priority and focus for ODOT.

Drivers of passengers who are involved in a car or truck accident often suffer injuries that require both immediate and ongoing medical care. Not only are injuries suffered in motor vehicle accidents physically painful, but they often result in an individual taking a financial hit. As medical bills pile up and days off of work accumulate, financial hardships may result.

Individuals injured in a car or truck accident that was caused by the negligence of another driver may choose to take legal action. A personal injury lawsuit can help injured parties recover compensation related to injuries, pain and suffering, medical expenses and lost wages.
