Alcohol suspected in car accident that leaves Ford City man dead

An Armstrong County man was killed on Sunday morning in a two-car accident. The 37-year-old man from Cherry Run Road in Ford City was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The two-car pile-up shut down Route 422 for nearly seven hours while first responders and clean-up crews worked to clear the scene. Kittanning, Rayburn, and Elderton fire departments all responded to assist police. Officials have initially stated alcohol is a likely factor in the accident, but it is still under investigation.

State police from Kittanning said the accident occurred a little after 1:30 a.m. on Route 422 in Kittanning at the intersection of Cornish Road and Blanket Hill Road. Police say the victim was traveling west on 422 when his 2006 Dodge truck was struck by an eastbound 1999 Ford F-350 truck head on. The victim is said to have died at the scene from blunt-force trauma to the abdomen and thorax.

The driver of the Ford, a 23-year-old from an unindicated hometown, is believed to have been intoxicated when he crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic and smashed into the Dodge. However, no charges will be filed until the toxicology results come through and the Armstrong County District Attorney makes a statement. The 23-year-old was airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital after the accident and the extent of his injuries are still unknown.

As the weather turns cooler, winter nears, and the holidays approach us, spending time with family and friends while enjoying a few adult beverages is a great way to unwind and have a good time with those to whom you are closest. However, if you're going to drink, never drive. Tragedies such as this should never happen. Be smart and take turns with your friends and family as the designated driver.
