Driver of SUV injured in collision with light rail

It is fair to say that no one wants to be involved in a car accident. Despite this notion motor vehicle accidents nonetheless happen on a regular basis in the Pittsburgh area. While they often involve other cars or trucks, sometimes other modes of transportation are involved. Earlier this month an automobile accident involving a commuter train occurred.

The incident took place at the end of the workday in Dormont. According to a spokesman with the Port Authority of Allegheny County, a Light Rail transit vehicle hit a SUV that passed into its path. The force of the impact caused the SUV to flip upside-down and made it impossible for the red line to operate for a period of time.

The driver of the SUV was injured in the incident. Reportedly that individual suffered back injuries and neck injuries. Fortunately they were characterized as minor. Hopefully the injuries will not turn out to be more serious than that. Sometimes injuries suffered in car accidents take time for the seriousness to be revealed. Injuries to the neck and back can be particularly painful.

It is not clear why the SUV was on the tracks in the path of the T rail car, when it was. In such incidents it is possible that the driver of the SUV did not see the train coming. There is no indication whether there was anything at the intersection letting drivers know that a train was passing. An investigation into the matter will likely determine why the crash occurred.
