Tractor trailer causes horrific 10 car accident at dangerous intersection in Churchill

Emergency crews from several areas were on the scene of a horrific accident in Churchill this afternoon.  News outlets reported a crash involving a tractor-trailer and multiple other vehicles on William Penn Highway (Route 22) and Rodi Road in Churchill.  Witness claim the tractor-trailer plowed into several cars and that many people were trapped and injured.  In total, the accident involved at least 10 cars and trucks.  There are reports of multiple people trapped and injuries.

PennDOT released a statement that due to a multi-vehicle crash, the eastbound I-376 off-ramp to Monroeville/Business 22 (Exit 80) is closed to traffic.

WPXI reported that the truck involved in this crash belongs to Hinkle Trucking based in Riverton, West Virginia.   According to the website, they are authorized as a “for hire” trucking company for interstate business and the company is authorized to haul grain, feed, hay and commodities in dry bulk.

According to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website, Hinkle Trucking has had 16 violations in the past 24 months.

Earlier this month, we commissioned a study on the most dangerous intersections in Allegheny County.  We reported that there were 10 crashes at this particular intersection from 2014 to 2016.  While it is unclear what caused the tractor-trailer to hit the other cars, intersection accidents are some of the most common types of accidents in Allegheny County.
