Trucking competition focuses on safety

Trucking safety is an important issue since it impacts so many people. Each year trucks cover close to 400 billion miles in the process of hauling 9 billion tons of freight. Because drivers of vehicles other than trucks share the road with them, all have a vested interest in doing what is necessary to make the roads safer. Earlier this month some professional truck drivers demonstrated their commitment to safety in an event held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The 77th annual National Truck Driving Championships was held in the city. The competition, which was hosted by the American Trucking Association, involved a total of 50 state trucking groups. To take part in it, drivers must not have been involved in an accident for a minimum of 12 months prior to the event. In addition, they must first win a competition at the state level.

The competition is multipart and consists of the following:

  • Driving test.
  • Pre-trip inspection test.
  • Personal interview.
  • Written test.

According to the chairman of the ATA the event highlights the group’s commitment to safety. It also recruits new drivers and promotes the industry.

There are many factors that could contribute to a tractor-trailer accident occurring including loads that are not secure, distracted drivers, equipment failure, driver fatigue and alcohol or drug use. In all of these instances an accident could potentially be avoided if the driver or other responsible parties would do their job. Accordingly, the responsible parties may be held responsible for damages via a personal injury lawsuit.
