DUI suspect kills pedestrian, goes home and continues drinking after he thought he “hit a deer”

Misfortune and heartbreak hit Pittsburgh early Sunday morning when a pedestrian was hit and killed by a drunk driver just after 2 a.m., police say. The 25-year-old University of Pittsburgh and Baldwin High School graduate was hit and killed in Brookline. Police say it didn't take them long to find the alleged responsible suspect.

Police say another 25-year-old man was driving home from a bar with friends and was admittedly drunk when he claims he thought he hit a deer, but kept driving. Another person in the car told police that he told the driver he may have hit a person, but that the driver refused to stop and check for sure. Instead, the driver admits that he went home and continued to drink alcohol.

Police were able to identify the driver from debris they discovered at the scene, determining it was a Ford Explorer that killed the man, eventually locating the vehicle in a nearby driveway with damage matching what they found at the scene of the accident. They arrested its owner shortly thereafter.

Upon arrest, police gave the suspect a blood-alcohol test, registering .129 BAC two hours after the accident occurred, estimating that the suspect was probably at least twice the legal limit when he hit and killed the victim.

Among other things, the suspect is facing driving with an expired license, reckless driving, vehicular homicide, and driving under the influence.
