A man from Somerset County has been cited for ignoring traffic signals after he drove through a red light and slammed into a Somerset Borough Police patrol cruiser late Sunday evening. The officer in the cruiser was injured.
The 42-year-old Ligonier Borough Police Chief, who also works part-time as an officer in Somerset, is said to have suffered minor injuries in the accident that happened at the intersection of Center Avenue and East Catherine Street near the Somerset Country Inn and 1st Summit Bank, about a half-mile south of the PA turnpike, shortly before 11 p.m. on Sunday night. The officer was taken to Somerset Hospital and eventually released.
Police told reporters that a 27-year-old man was driving a 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup truck west along East Catherine Street just before North Center Avenue when he didn't stop at a red traffic light. The driver drove through the intersection and directly into the officer's 2012 Dodge Charger police cruiser.
A passenger in the pickup truck, a 31-year-old woman also from Somerset, was taken to Somerset hospital via ambulance and treated for what a Pennsylvania State Trooper called minor injuries. The driver was cited for ignoring traffic control devices and careless driving.
