Greene County nursing home resident dies from asphyxiation

A Greene County woman and resident of the Golden Living Center nursing home in Waynesburg died Saturday evening.

The 94-year-old woman is said to have died after sliding out of her bed at around 6:30 a.m. on February 22, according to the Greene County Coroner's Office. The cause of death is said to be asphyxiation by compression and has been ruled as accidental.

Investigators say that they think the woman either attempted to get out of bed, perhaps to go to the bathroom, or moved her legs off the bed while sleeping and slid out of bed. The woman's head became wedged between the mattress and one of the bed rails. The autopsy reports that she struggled, but was unable to free herself and died in that position.

The woman had been a resident of the Golden Living Center for only six months. The investigation will continue and while family members and police do not suspect foul play, they are baffled as to why someone wasn't in to check on the woman or why no one heard any cries for help.
