Springdale Township accident kills 11-year-old boy, injures two others

A two-vehicle accident this past Friday sent to two people to the hospital and took an 11-year-old boy's life. The accident happened on Riddle Run Road in Springdale Township, just near the Freeport Road intersection.

Police say that shortly before 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon a Mitsubishi Eclipse, being driven southward by the boy's mother, spun out of control due to what officials are now calling "slick conditions."

Witnesses say that the Mitsubishi spun sideways and slid into northbound traffic when a Kia Sorrento slammed into the driver's side of the car. Although the driver's side was hit, the driver only received minor injuries, but the jolt of the crash killed the boy, police say.

The driver of the Kia was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison and the driver of the Mitsubishi was taken to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. The boy, a student at Highcliff Elementary in the North Hills School District, was pronounced dead at 5:17 p.m. after he was taken to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Riddle Run Road was closed until just shortly before 8 p.m. Police have not made any official statements, but say that slippery road conditions are likely the main contributor to the accident.
