Electric cars more often involved in pedestrian accidents

Car accidents often involve multiple vehicles colliding. In some situations however they may involve not another vehicle but rather a pedestrian. While there can be many reasons, often a combination, that result in an accident such as this, all would likely agree that it is a good idea for drivers to pay attention to their surroundings and watch for pedestrians.

In certain situations when a vehicle is barreling toward a pedestrian it may be possible for that individual to get out of the way. This evasive action is dependent on the pedestrian being able to move quickly enough to avoid the collision which usually means that they become aware of the situation early enough to be able get out of the path.

But what if the car is so quite that the pedestrian does not know it is approaching? This is a very real issue for walkers throughout the nation. The issue is particularly a problem where hybrid and electric vehicles are concerned. While they may be good for the environment, the low level of noise they emit while travelling at slow speeds has not been good for the health of many individuals .A study conducted by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration in 2009 found that these two types of vehicles were more likely to be involved in pedestrian injuries.

Understanding this is a safety issue, the NHTSA recently submitted a proposal that require electric and hybrid vehicles to maintain a certain level of sound when travelling at a rate below 18 miles per hour. What are your thoughts on this proposal? Do you think the change will help?
