School bus in rollover accident renews seat belt debate

Many individuals who have been involved in a rollover accident recall it being a terrifying event. Motor vehicle rollover accidents often result in those involved sustaining various injuries. The likelihood of individuals who are involved in rollover accidents sustaining serious or even fatal injuries are dramatically increased when the vehicle's occupants are not wearing seat belts.

Ohio residents were recently reminded of the dangers associated with rollover accidents when news of a school bus accident made the news. The driver of the school bus lost control of the vehicle which resulted in the bus flipping and rolling over. In total, 22 children were injured and required medical attention.

Luckily no fatalities resulted from this particular accident. It has, however, renewed debate around the issue of whether or not school buses should be equipped with seat belts. School bus manufacturers have long argued that seat belts are not necessary as buses are equipped with large cushioned seating that helps protect and absorb crash impact. Video footage from this actual accident, however, shows children aboard the bus being thrown about.

Likewise, accident tests using crash dummies show just how dangerous rollover accidents can be especially when vehicle occupants are not properly restrained. With nothing to secure them, children are tossed around and are much more likely to sustain major injuries.

Injuries common in rollover accidents include head and brain injuries, neck and spinal injuries as well as broken bones and contusions.
