UPMC, Staffing Firms Named in Hepatitis C Lawsuit

According to Health Imaging Magazine’s website, UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was named in a lawsuit involving the infection of several patients with the hepatitis C virus. The article, titled “UPMC, staffing firms named in hepatitis C lawsuit,” indicates that a Kansas woman was infected with Hepatitis C while having a 2010 medical procedure at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. At the time of the procedure, radiologic technologist David Kwiatkowski, who has been diagnosed with hepatitis C, worked at Hays Medical Center under a temporary agreement with Medical Solutions, an Omaha, Nebraska staffing agency. The article also reports that “Before Medical Solutions, Kwiatkowski worked at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Presbyterian under a contract with Maxim Staffing Solutions out of Maryland.”

The lawsuit alleges that while Kwiatkoski worked at UPMC Presby he was caught with Fentanyl in his system and with empty syringes in his pockets and locker.  This was discovered after another employee claims to have witnessed Kwiatkoski taking a syringe from a patient’s tray and replacing it with another syringe that turned out to be filled with saline and have his blood on the needle.
