Ohio community mourns loss of teen killed in car accident

Members of an Ohio community are mourning the loss of a 16-year-old boy who recently died in a fatal rollover car accident. One of five teen passengers in the car, he sustained fatal injuries when the speeding car crashed, ripped through a fence and rolled over.

The five teens were all members of their school's band. While on a break from practice, they decided to drive around. Police investigators believe the driver of the vehicle was going too fast and appeared to have lost control of the vehicle. The four other teens involved in the accident were all treated for various injuries at a nearby hospital and released.

The accident has left many questioning why five teenagers were driving around together in the first place. In Ohio, it's against the law for a teenage driver to transport more than one other teen without the presence of an adult in the vehicle. The reason for the law stems from studies conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. According to IIHS, teenage drivers are 50 percent more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle accident when transporting one other teen passenger. The risk of being involved in an accident increases by six times when teen drivers transport three or more teen passengers.

These alarming statistics have prompted many states, including Ohio, to enact laws prohibiting teens from driving certain hours of the day and from transporting more than one other teen passenger without adult supervision. Despite these laws, however, accidents such as the tragic one that took the life of one teen and injured four others continue to occur.

Police officials report that many of the laws aimed to govern teen driving practices are largely unenforceable. For example, they are not able to pull over a motor vehicle simply because they believe the driver and occupants are of a certain age. They urge parents to monitor teen drivers and educate teens on safe driving practices.
