Making Ohio roadways safer for pedestrians

The stretch of Ohio 235 from Gerlaugh Road and U.S. 40 in Clark County is not only treacherous for pedestrians, it is deadly. The pass lacks many basic pedestrian safety measures, including any crosswalks or pedestrian signals. Consequently, between 2007 and 2010, four fatal auto-pedestrian accidents occurred.

Currently in the planning stages, residents and business owners in the area are collaborating with Ohio Department of Transportation to remedy the deadly conditions. Although funding is tight, many rightfully feel that these changes need to be implemented to curb any additional loss of life.

Purposed changes could range anywhere from $7 million to $12 million and include adding raised medians, roundabouts and traffic signals, among other safety measures that would hopefully decrease the number of both auto-pedestrian and auto accidents among the close to 14,000 cars that travel on the route daily.

Some business owners operating along the stretch object on the grounds that it will make it more difficult for customers to enter the business owners' stores. While Ohio Department of Transportation is taking objections into consideration, the bottom line is that pedestrians are dying and the situation demands a remedy.

The treacherous conditions of this road are an even greater reason for Ohio drivers to implement the highest level of caution when driving on this stretch. Pedestrians that are struck on this pass or any other stretch in Ohio could be entitled to compensation for the damages incurred. Additionally, if the potential impact proved to be fatal, the surviving family could file a wrongful death claim to seek their just compensation.
