Authorities from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) are currently investigating a trucking accident that left ten members of the Ohio Army National Guard seriously hurt. The soldiers involved were being taken to Camp Ravenna in Newton Falls, Ohio, just west of Warren.

Ohio State Troopers told reporters that the accident happened Sunday night at the intersection of Ravenna Warren Road / State Route 5 and State Route 534 as the van the soldiers were being transported in was making a left onto SR 534, just a block away from its destination. Police say the driver of the commercial tractor trailer ran a red light and hit a Toyota Corolla and then the Chevrolet transporter van.

Police say the van rolled over at least once after being hit, injuring the men inside. All of the soldiers were taken either to St. Joseph Hospital, Robinson Memorial Hospital, or Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Initial reports do not list the conditions of the soldiers. The two people in the Toyota Corolla were taken to Robinson Memorial Hospital with what police are calling non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver walked away unscathed.

The soldiers have all been identified and they come from all over the country, including Pennsylvania and Ohio. Police say the truck was hauling nearly 45,000 pounds of plastic pellets. Police say that alcohol had nothing to do with the accident, but have not mentioned whether or not the driver might have fallen asleep, although there is serious speculation. The truck driver will likely be charged, but the details of those charges are not yet available. Ohio State Police say that the investigation in ongoing.
