Nursing negligence results in death of 14-year-old Ohio girl

The large majority of doctors and nurses are highly trained and esteemed professionals who provide excellent patient care. There are some, however, that fail to understand the significance of their position and the important actions and decisions that come with it. When doctor and nursing negligence occurs, serious and even fatal consequences can result.

Three nurses have been detained and are awaiting trial for charges related to nursing negligence that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old girl. The girl had cerebral palsy and was allowed to remain in the care of her mother through a state-run program that was funded by a Medicaid program.

As a result of her cerebral palsy, the young girl had very limited mobility and was not able to speak or feed herself. Therefore, she required constant care and attention to perform everyday tasks related to grooming, eating and showering.

As part of the long-term care program, three nurses were assigned to care for the girl. A 42-year-old licensed practical nurse was responsible for attending to the young girl's needs eight hours a day for six days every week. Another 42-year nurse was responsible for supervising the acting care nurse provider. Additionally, a third 63-year-old nurse was responsible for ensuring the young girl was receiving quality care that was in compliance with the state-run program in which she was enrolled.

Tragically, the young girl recently died as a result of starvation. At the time of her death, she weighed only 28 pounds. She was fifthly, covered in lice and her tiny body was riddled with open sores.

In addition to the charges being brought against the three nurses assigned to care for the girl, the girl's acting physician also faces charges stemming for neglect and medical malpractice.
