What to do after a car accident

Car accidents happen all the time in Pennsylvania and Ohio, but many people are unsure of exactly how to handle the immediate aftermath of a crash. Do you have to stay at the scene? What should you say and what shouldn't you say? What are your responsibilities? In today's post, we will help you learn the answers to these questions and others, so you can be prepared if you are even involved in an accident.

First, and most importantly, you must stay at the scene. Leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in injuries or death is illegal.

Next, check on anyone else who was involved in the accident. If anyone is injured, including yourself, call for medical assistance and then call the police. Even if there are no injuries, but the damage to your car or another driver's car is significant, you must still report the accident to police. When police officers do arrive, it is a good idea to write down their names and badge numbers.

At some point after the crash, it is important to exchange personal and insurance information, including names and driver's license numbers, with the other drivers involved in the accident. When you are speaking with the other drivers, however, do not apologize or admit fault. Doing so could be construed as claiming legal liability.

Once you have collected important information, talk to witnesses who might have seen the crash. If they are willing to share it, take down their names and contact information.

Finally, if you suffered serious injuries in the accident, it may be wise to contact a personal injury attorney. An experienced attorney can help you understand whether filing a personal injury claim makes sense in your case. He or she can also deal with your insurance company on your behalf to make sure your rights are protected.
