Tips on motorcycle rider safety

Motorcyclists are at a higher risk of injury from crashes than other drivers, but there are some handy safety tips to reduce the likelihood of getting hurt.

Many people enjoy riding motorcycles in Pennsylvania. Motorcycles are lightweight, able to make sharp turns, and allow the rider to experience the open air while driving. However, while these vehicles are fun to drive, they also pose a much higher risk of injury to the operator and passengers in the case that a wreck or accident occurs. It is highly important for motorcycle drivers to be fully aware of the proper safety measures that will lower the chance of an unwanted mishap.

Wear proper gear

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation states that one safety tip riders can follow is to wear the proper gear. Boots should have the laces tucked in, and be made slip resistant and sturdy. The protection and grip offered by gloves can also go a long way. A strong material like leather should be worn to protect the torso and legs. Some specialized jackets have plates located in vital areas, serving as a type of light body armor.

When it comes to helmets, people should select one that is approved by the Department of Transportation. The face can also be more fully protected from such dangers as flying debris knocked up from the road with a faceshield that is resistant to shatter. It is also important for motorcycle passengers to wear proper protection.

Employ good driving habits

Since a motorcycle is smaller than a car, it can be easy for motorcyclists to find themselves in a driver’s blind spot. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation advises that motorcycle riders not follow too closely. A distance of at least four seconds allows ample time to stop in case something unexpected happens with the vehicle ahead.

Having only two wheels, motorcycles have a greater likelihood of slipping and losing traction. The PDOT notes that by dividing a lane into thirds, there are three positions a motorcycle can occupy. Sometimes, it is safer to occupy one of the edge positions, for example, if there is a patch of oil in the middle of the lane.

A highly important point is not to drive too aggressively. Bikers should avoid the temptation to weave in between cars, riding the dotted line that divides lanes. When passing, they should check for surrounding traffic, signal, change lanes, and then accelerate quickly past the blind spot of the car being passed. Signaling before changing lanes can help other drivers know what a motorcyclist is about to do.

If riders have found themselves injured as a result of a car crash, they may be able to get compensation through legal representation. Consulting a Pennsylvania attorney experienced with personal injury is a good way to explore their options.
