Family of Bride-to-Be Injured in Pleasant Hills Crash

A construction zone in Pleasant Hills, Pa., was the site of six motor vehicle accidents in a one-week period. The latest accident resulted in injuries to the family of a bride-to-be on their way to a rehearsal dinner. The bride’s mother and stepfather were seriously injured and taken to local hospitals. The wedding party witnessed the accident from the patio of Primanti Bros. Restaurant on the 800 block of Route 51/Clairton Boulevard.

The accident occurred when the family’s red Hyundai, while turning left into the restaurant parking lot, was struck by a white pickup truck. Eyewitnesses reported that the impact was so severe that the battery of the Hyundai was driven through the vehicle’s headlights.

Police reported that the driver of the white pickup truck may have been speeding. They further confirmed that the accident was one of six that had occurred at the location in a week. It was also the third accident that day. Police stated that Penn DOT and the construction company were in the process of making changes to the site. “They have inspectors coming out, and they’re going to put a curb there to prevent accidents from occurring,” stated Police Sgt. Richard Painter.

Municipalities may be found liable for unsafe road conditions, provided they receive notice of the unsafe condition before an accident. Municipal liability is often regulated by state law, which requires that a notice of claim be filed with the municipality in a relatively short period of time.

Private construction companies may also be found liable for injuries caused by obstruction of public highways and streets as well as not following permits issued by local authorities. Most municipalities require construction companies to provide proof of insurance prior to hiring to ensure that funds are available in the event people are injured due to the construction company’s work.
